"Ein exzellenter Science Slam. Wie junge Forschende in Berlin unsere Welt von morgen mitgestalten" at Mall Anders
Young scientists from four Clusters of Excellence of the Berlin University Alliance present their research work in a science slam in the Mall Anders learning lab in the Wilma Shoppen shopping centre. Technical vocabulary or long lists do not have a place here. Instead, be curious about neuroscience, intelligence research, liberal orders, and catalysis research for more sustainability - anything that serves to illustrate this is permitted: costumes, props, films, PowerPoint presentations or experimental set-ups. The only limit is time; the slammers have fifteen minutes each! Many of the candidates are taking part in a science slam for the first time and are ready to leave the ivory tower of science. In the end, the audience decides who will be honoured as the winner. If you want to go deeper into the content, the participants will be ready to talk to the visitors afterwards over cool drinks. Come to our Science Slam - it's very excellent!
About the Science Slam at Mall Anders
Technical vocabulary or long lists had no place here. Instead, researchers presented their areas – mathematics, cultures of the material, neuroscience, intelligence research, liberal orders and catalysis research for more sustainability with a high entertainment value, comprehensible presentation and exciting examples! Many of the candidates took part in a science slam for the first time, ready to leave the ivory tower of science. At the end, the audiences decided the winner and had the chance to go deeper into the content in a personal discussion afterwards over cool drinks. This science slam cleary was: Excellent!

Speakers
Janika Spannagel (SCRIPTS): Janika Spannagel is a postdoctoral researcher in the research project "Science Friction: Patterns, Causes and Effects of Academic Freedom Contestations" at SCRIPTS and the FU Berlin. Previously, she was co-developer of the Academic Freedom Index.
Rachel Lippert, PhD (NeuroCure): Rachel Lippert is the Junior Research Group Leader of NeuroCure and Leibniz Best Minds Junior Research Group Leader Neurocircuit Development and Function at the German Intsitute of Human Nutrition Potsdam-Rehbrücke. Rachel Lippert studied Chemistry and English at Albion College in Albion, Michigan, USA from 2004 to 2008. During her subsequent doctoral studies at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee, USA, she focused on the function of the melanocortin-3 receptor, which is involved in maintaining the balance between food intake and energy expenditure and thus a constant body weight. At the Max Planck Institute for Metabolic Research in Cologne, she researched how the mother's diet affects the wiring of nerve cells in the developing brain of the offspring.
Benjamin Lang (SCIoI): Benjamin Lang is a doctoral student in the 25 Mice Learning in Social Interaction project at SCIoI and at the FU Berlin. Here, the molecular biologist is investigating learning strategies of mice in relation to affect and emotion signals as the basis for a synthetic model of socially reinforced learning.
Victor Nicolaus (UniSysCat): Victor Nikolaus is doing his doctorate in Prof. Dr. Silke Leimhühler's UniSysCat group at the University of Potsdam. Here he is researching new artificial biocatalysts. He is a scholarship holder of the EC2/BIG-NSE graduate school. In addition to his scientific activities, he plays theatre.

About the "Mall Anders".
The temporary learning lab Mall Anders (located in the shopping mall Wilma Shoppen in Berlin-Charlottenburg) was initiated by the universities of Berlin and is funded by the Berlin University Alliance until the end of June 2022. The learning lab in the style of a pop-up store leaves the spatial context of universities to intertwine with Berlin's urban and civil society innovatively and experimentally. So far, this new meeting place has offered students and local actors the opportunity to think about pressing issues of our future, to discuss proposed solutions, and sometimes to test them directly on a small scale. Since December 2021, a wide range of events on various topics has been taking place there. The Mall Anders has a model character for further projects of knowledge exchange as well as the visibility of the Clusters of Excellence of the Berlin University Alliance and its topics in unusual places.

SCRIPTS at Mall Anders
SCRIPTS wants to achieve a knowledge exchange between scientists, civil society, and citizens in the neighbourhood by cooperating with the Mall Anders. As interactive and comprehensible as possible, academics and non-academics alike shall have the opportunity to discuss liberal orders at eye level and to examine its contestations, potentials, and problems. Whether in cooperation with the other Clusters of Excellence of the Berlin University Alliance or on our own, at Mall Anders the cluster wants to bring the topics and research of SCRIPTS to the public and discuss them with an audience as broad as possible. Since SCRIPTS is about social science, it is aiming to interact with civil society in new and experimental ways, discussing and working on broad social challenges with them. In the Mall Anders, the cluster does not simply want to hold lectures or panel discussions but to achieve an exchange of knowledge of the big social issues examined by SCRIPTS by interacting with local actors; for instance, in Science Slams, Meet the Scientist, workshops, and interactive exhibitions.
